Kanryo Higaonna, the restorer of Naha-style martial arts
Born on March 10, 1853, in Nishimura, Naha City. Around 1867-1868, he traveled to Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China, and became an apprentice to Master Liu Liu Kou of Southern Shaolin Kung Fu, where he trained. Having earned the absolute trust of Master Liu Liu Kou, Master Higaonna Ryokan further honed his skills, and his reputation as a martial artist spread throughout the martial arts world. After returning to Japan, he became the mainstream of Naha-te and dedicated himself to its spread, gradually becoming revered as the restorer of karate (Tang Dynasty Karate) or the "founder of Naha-te." Master Higaonna Ryokan dedicated his life to Naha-te and passed away in 1915 (Taisho 4) at the age of 63.
The founder of Goju-ryu: Chojun Miyagi
Born on April 25, 1888 (Meiji 21) in Higashi-machi, Naha City. In 1902 (Meiji 35), he became a disciple of Kanryo Higaonna, a master of Naha-te, and after much training, he mastered its secrets and inherited Naha-te. Furthermore, from 1915, he traveled to Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China three times to study Chinese martial arts. Even after the death of Master Kanryo, he continued to dedicate himself to the pursuit and refinement of martial arts, and in 1930 (Showa 5), he named his own martial art "Goju-ryu" and worked hard to spread it. Master Chojun Miyagi, the "founder of Goju-ryu," lived his life solely dedicated to martial arts and passed away on October 8, 1953 (Showa 28) at the age of 65.
Anichi Miyagi, a disciple of the founder of the school
Born on February 9, 1931 (Showa 6) in Kamiizumi-cho, Naha City. In 1948 (Showa 23), he became a disciple of the founder, Miyagi Chojun Sensei, and as his beloved disciple in his later years, he devoted himself to training and inherited all of Goju-ryu. After Chojun Sensei's death, he instructed Goju-ryu to many practitioners, including the students of Jundokan (founded by Miyazato Eiichi Sensei in 1957). Miyagi Yasuichi Sensei, a "gate disciple," faithfully followed the teachings of the founder and strived to preserve and pass on the authentic Goju-ryu martial arts, and passed away on April 28, 2009 (Heisei 21) at the age of 79.
Goju-ryu Martial Arts School, Headmaster: Tomoyuki Kato
Born in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo in 1951 (Showa 26). In 1967 (Showa 42), he became a disciple of Goju-ryu master Shozo Ishigami. Later, he received instruction from Morio Higaonna (International Okinawa Goju-ryu Karate-do Federation). In 1994 (Heisei 6), he became a disciple of Yasuichi Miyagi, a close disciple of the founder of Goju-ryu, Chojun Miyagi, and trained as an apprentice. In 1998 (Heisei 10), he was awarded the title of Hanshi 10th Dan and recognized as a successor to Goju-ryu martial arts. In 1976 (Showa 51), he founded the Goju-ryu Martial Arts Hall, and in 2001 (Heisei 13), he established the NPO Goju-ryu Martial Arts Association, striving to preserve, promote, and develop Goju-ryu as a traditional culture.
